What you should know about Self-Publishing your book

So you’ve written your very first book. Congratulations! 

Now that’s out of the way, the next part is getting it published and to start marketing so it touches the hearts of people around the world.

What I am going to share here are the steps you need to know in order for you to publish your own book.This is where some help may be required.

Start Marketing


If you haven’t already, start marketing your book. If you use social media, let your followers know that you’re launching a book soon and get them really excited so they are ready to buy or download when launch day comes. Launching a book is where all the hype happens and when you are likely to get the most sales. Plan ahead of time, at least three to six months prior to the day you launch. Hire a marketing expert if you need help in this area.

Attract your audience. You want people to read your book but not everyone will. This is why you need to find your niche. Let’s say you’ve written a book about exercising during pregnancy. Not all pregnant women will be interested in this book. You will need to find pregnant women who are interested in exercising techniques during pregnancy.

The best way to find your audience is through market research. You can ask questions in polls, on social media, on your website, in local areas. 

Build a relationship with them. You can perhaps capture emails, create a group and follow other groups in your particular niche.


Preparing to Self-Publish

Editing is a must! You really do need to have an editor check your written work for grammar and spelling and a proofreader to check to ensure the edits meet expectations. An editor may also make suggestions so your paragraphs read well, especially if you read it out loud.

Structuring is the way your book will flow.

The elements of your book make up the structure. These include the title page, copyright, contents, forward, chapters, and thank you page. Depending on the type of book you’ve written, you may have all or just a few.

The layout of your book is where your book comes together. It’s the formatting stage. Here you will decide on the size of your book, creating a template, making sure the margins align with the publisher’s specifications, your font is chosen, you may want to include indents at the beginning of each chapter, headers and footers and page numbers.

There are many programs you can use to format your book depending on your skill level. A basic word document can do it, but if you want a more professional look that is easy to format, programs like Reedsy editor, Vellum, Ultimate ebook creator will do it. If you like a learning curve and are willing to spend money on professional software,  Scrivner, Jutoh and Adobe inDesign are the best.

Create a cover. When having a cover designed, ensure you know the dimensions of your book first. Your publisher will have all of these specifications.This is most important if you are printing your book. You may want to hire a cover designer if you are unable to create one yourself. Canva, especially for ebooks is a great tool to use for designing covers if you want a low cost, do it yourself design.


Publishing your book

You’ve finally put your book together, now you’ll need to convert the documents into a PDF, epub or mobi file. These are the formats your publisher will use to submit your book for publishing.

Some applications will convert files to these formats however Calibre is a free tool you can use to convert your document to an epub or mobi file for ebooks.

You will need an ISBN if you want to sell your book online and in bookstores. An ISBN is the international standard book number that you see on the copyright page and in the barcode. 

You will need one ISBN for each format – Print or ebook. Apple iBooks will also need a seperate one. 

Your publisher can provide you with a free ISBN however, it is best to purchase your own. You will have your own rights to your book and can publish it where ever you choose. You become the publisher.

A free ISBN from Amazon for example will make Amazon the publisher and you will have limitations on where you can sell your book. You can purchase ISBN’s from Bowker or Bowker Thorpe.

For print books, you will also need to purchase a barcode.

There are many more, however these are well known and either have a small fee to pay to publish or are free.
There are pros and cons with all publishers so you should do your own research to find the best one for you.

Once you’re ready to publish, upload your ready made documents, complete the required details within the publisher account and you are published!

Now it’s up to you to spread the word to get your book out. Hopefully you started your marketing plan long before you published!
